The Holidays Are Gone. Get Serious.
The holidays are over. The Christmas tree has been taken down and all traces of holiday decorations are gone. The MLK holiday has yielded more snowfall than we’ve had in several years. Time to get serious about taxes, and moving forward with your business. The Snowstorms I had my son move the snowblower from the shed to the back porch last week, but nobody thought to try starting it. For the past two years, I’ve nicknamed my snowblower “snow insurance”. I scared the snow away simply by bringing out of the shed. The snow came on Tuesday, and my wife (against my objections) shoveled the powder without too much stress. This year, shoveling snow myself was out of the question since I am recovering from back surgery, and will be getting my hip replaced next week. My thought was that snow doesn’t last more than a few days, so we could let it go until it melts. My wife had other ideas. The snow Thursday through Friday was considerably heavier and I was able to get the snowblower started, so my wife had her first venture actually using it. She got the first pass of the driveway and 360 feet of sidewalk (I have a corner property) done without incident, but the snow continued throughout the day. We started to dress later in the afternoon to take another pass at the driveway, and found that our neighbors had already brought their snowblowers over and were almost done. Thanks for the kindness of neighbors. Getting Ready for Taxes I’ve gotten the first notices that tax documents are ready. I have created a folder on my hard drive, and a folder for paper documents to park these so can begin to prepare for tax time. As they come in, I detach any tax forms, or file any forms or year-end statements that arrive by snail mail. I have archived all previous year folders and done end-of-year backups. (I use GotBackup, so my files are automatically backed up to the secure cloud). I’ve moved all current year paper documents to their own banker’s box, and have set up a new set of folders for 2024. I’ve already changed over my Quickbooks files to the new year and archived last year’s data file. This week, I will be going into each bank account, and extracting monthly statements and tax documents, and downloading data into spreadsheets so I can categorize expenses for both personal (ie medical, pharmacy, tax, charitable expenses that can be itemized) and business (categories on schedule c). Data collection is the hardest part. Once I have the files, it only takes a couple hours of spreadsheet work to pull it all together for my accountant. I hope that sharing my process helps YOU get more organized It’s amazing how much stress can be alleviated simply by STARTING EARLY and not waiting until tax deadline.
